For the Hadrill ritual, the order is shampoo, treatment mask, conditioner. Use the mask one to two times weekly. On other wash days, the routine is simply shampoo followed by conditioner.
This sequence follows the directions for Hadrill's three products. Other masks may have different instructions, including replacing conditioner. Follow the products you use and the aftercare requirements for your extension system.
The routine at a glance
| Product | When and where |
|---|---|
| The Shampoo | First, every wash. Massage through wet hair into a lather, then rinse. |
| The Treatment Mask | Second on treatment days, one to two times weekly. Mid-lengths to ends for five to ten minutes, then rinse. |
| The Conditioner | Last, every wash. Mid-lengths to ends for one to two minutes, then rinse. |
Before you start
Check the care instructions for your extension brand and attachment method, including how long to wait before the first wash after fitting. Gently remove tangles using the brush or comb your stylist recommends. Work from the ends upwards while supporting the section to avoid pulling on the attachments.
Keep hair moving in the direction it falls while washing. Avoid piling it on top of your head or rubbing the lengths together. Have all three products within reach so you can rinse each one out before the next step.
First: cleanse with The Shampoo

Wet the hair thoroughly. Apply The Shampoo and massage with fingertips, paying attention to the scalp and following your stylist's instructions around the rows or bonds. Work gently through the hair and rinse thoroughly without scrubbing the lengths together.
The Shampoo is protein-free and sulphate-free. If you are still choosing a cleanser, our guide to protein-free shampoo for extensions explains the label checks to make before buying.
Second: use The Treatment Mask on treatment days

After rinsing the shampoo, gently squeeze out excess water. Smooth The Treatment Mask through damp mid-lengths and ends, keeping it away from bonds, tapes and other attachment points. Follow your supplier's guidance for how far below the attachments to begin.
Leave for five to ten minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Use one to two times weekly as directed. The mask is an extra treatment step in the Hadrill routine; it does not need to be added to every wash.
Last: finish with The Conditioner

Apply The Conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends after rinsing out the mask. Keep it away from the attachment points, leave for one to two minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
On a wash day without the mask, use conditioner directly after shampoo. If the full routine leaves the lengths feeling too coated, check the amount you use, placement and rinsing with your stylist before adding more products.
Why this order?
Hadrill's product directions place the mask between cleansing and the final conditioner. The mask provides an additional conditioning step; The Conditioner finishes the routine by helping soften, smooth and detangle the lengths.
For a repeatable routine, apply each product to the intended area, allow the stated time and rinse thoroughly before moving to the next step.
After rinsing
Gently blot excess water rather than rubbing or twisting the hair. Detangle carefully using the method recommended by your stylist, supporting each section as you work from the ends upwards. Follow your extension supplier's drying instructions, especially around attachments and before bed.
If the lengths keep catching or an attachment feels loose, have your stylist check them. More mask or a longer leave-in time is not a substitute for checking the installation.
Choose your wash day
- Regular wash: The Shampoo, then The Conditioner.
- Treatment wash: The Shampoo, The Treatment Mask, then The Conditioner.
Choose your overall washing frequency with your stylist according to your scalp and extension system. The mask's one-to-two-times-weekly directions describe treatment frequency, not a rule that everyone should wash their hair the same number of times.
The Trio contains the full-size Shampoo 270ml, Treatment Mask 250ml and Conditioner 270ml together. You can also browse the individual products.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need conditioner after The Treatment Mask?
Yes. Hadrill’s directions recommend The Conditioner after The Treatment Mask. Rinse out the mask first, then apply conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends for one to two minutes and rinse.
Should I use The Treatment Mask every time I wash?
The directions recommend one to two times weekly. On other wash days, follow The Shampoo with The Conditioner.
Can I leave The Treatment Mask on overnight?
Use it for the directed five to ten minutes, then rinse. It is a rinse-out treatment; an overnight application is outside those directions.
How close to bonds or tapes can I apply conditioner?
Keep the mask and conditioner away from attachments. Begin on the mid-lengths and ends, and follow your supplier’s method-specific guidance for the distance below the attachments.
Does every hair mask need conditioner afterwards?
No. Some masks have different directions. The shampoo–mask–conditioner sequence here is the Hadrill routine; follow the instructions for another formula if you use one.
